Bates, Katherine Lee b. August 12, 1859 d. March 28, 1929
Poetess, Author, Educator. The author of the lyrics to "America the Beautiful", she was born in the town of Falmouth on Massachusetts' Cape Cod, and her father died only a month after her birth from a spinal tumor. A precocious child, it has been related that "Katie" helped her mother survive the first years of widowhood by being a source of endless joy. Keen with words, she kept a little journal and was regularly making entries by age nine.

Marathon Runner. He was a two-time Boston Marathon champion who became a beloved figure in the history of the race by running it a record 61 times.
