What are Herkimer Diamonds?
Herkimer Diamonds are beautiful double-terminated quartz crystals found in Herkimer, New York. Incredibly, these phenomenal gemstones are close to five hundred million years old. The crystals are magnificent works of nature, found in the rock, having a diamond - like geometrical shape; thus, the name recognition of "Herkimer Diamonds".

They have this place in Arkansas where you can dig or mine for diamonds for I think 20 dollars a day and some folks have got some big diamonds like worth some major money. I am gonna check that link out

I found this little blurb regarding Herkimer Diamonds at healingcrystals.net/crystalsproperties.htm and thought it would be worth sharing. Herkimer Diamond – A stout shaped double terminated crystal that resembles a faceted diamond. They are found in Herkimer County, New York. They are clear/bright to smoky/bright and may contain rainbows. They have a hardness of 7.5 instead of 7.0. They energize and enliven all who keep them near. Their energy helps one begin again in this lifetime.
Herkimer Quartz Diamonds: These are harder than most quartz 7.5 and found in and around Herkimer NY USA. Named because of there diamond like quality of refracting light they are short stubby crystals with double terminations. These are said to be pure manifestations of Spiritual light. They purify one's energy field, and attune and cleanse and align all Chakras. These are powerful usually small crystals and are excellent for working with other stones and crystals they can magnify the others energy. Used for dream and vision work. |

Were you able to find one or more when you visited the mines? Do they charge much for the visit or if you find one?

I haven't been to Herkimer in about 5 years. Last time I went the price was $7 for the entire day, and you keep what you find. I'm sure the price has probably gone up, but it's well worth it. You can rent hammers and chisels from them or bring your own.
As far as finding the Herkimer diamonds, that's like ghost hunting; never know if you will find one or not.
You can just look along the ground for tiny stones, or chisel your way through rocks and/or the ledge in the mine. By all means, wear sunscreen, bring water, and you might even want to bring along an umbrella or some other kind of small shade producing structure to sit under.
All in all, it's a fun time though!!
